Aims and Objectives
The program can be used very flexibly. It is up to the tutor to set suitable objectives.
After using the program students should be able to:
- define the term local anaesthesia;
- list mechanisms for producing local anaesthesia;
- describe the chemistry of local anaesthetics and the importance of ionisation;
- describe the nature and function of voltage gated sodium channels and their various states;
- list the principal methods of administering local anaesthetics and relate this to clinical use;
- outline the adverse effects of local anaesthetics and explain the use of adjuvants.

Program Description
The program provides an overview of local anaesthetic drugs and their clinical use in
relieving or preventing pain and provides opportunities for students to pursue some aspects of the
material in greater detail. It is suitable for science, dental or medical undergraduates and others wanting
information at level 1 or 2 of a university degree course. The user has to interact with the program,
making decisions and choices and by participating in assessment exercises.
