Summary

This program enables students to learn about the pathophysiology, symptoms and pharmacological treament of asthma. On completion of this package students should be able to:
- outline the structure and normal physiology of the airways
-explain how respiratory function is measured
-describe the pathophysiological changes which occur in asthma
-understand the clinical consequences of asthma

The program covers:
The structure and function of the airways and their physiological control.
The methods used to assess respiratory function (FEVI) and Peak Flow.
The causes of the pathophysiological changes which lead to dyspnea and bronchial hyperresponsiveness and how this affects respiratory antagonists
The actions of a range of drugs used in the treatment of asthma (B2-adrenoceptor agonists, muscarinic antagonists, glucocorticosteroids, xanthines, cromoglycate and nedocromil).

The program may be used for independent study (primary learning or revision) and would occupy students for 3-4 hours of study. The interactive questions may be useful for self assessment. The program contain a HELP facility and a bibliography.

System Requirements

The package is supplied on a CD-ROM Installation Disc and can be installed to a local hard disc or network drive. The minimum requirement is an IBM-type PC, 386 25MHz or better, 4Mb RAM, VGA monitor, Windows 3.1 and mouse.
