The program has been designed to meet the needs
of a wide range of Life Science teaching schemes. Modules 1 and
2 are appropriate to a range of foundation, intermediate human biology
and para-medical courses. Module 3 has been written primarily for
pharmacy and medical students.
The liver package has been written as three discrete modules.
Module 1 A description of the structure of the liver illustrated
by 3D animated graphics. The module contains a self-evaluation section.
Module 2 A detailed consideration of the functions of the
liver which includes in-depth biochemical consideration of the following
activities: a) Carbohydrate synthesis and metabolism. b) Protein
synthesis and metabolism. c) Fat metabolism. d) Bile formation.
e) Hormone inactivation. f) Liver storage functions. g) Drug metabolism.
The module also contains a self-evaluation exercise.
Module 3 A brief introduction to common liver function
tests and their significance in disease diagnosis. Attention is
given to the following tests: Serum protein levels (albumin and
globulin) Prothrombin time Gamma-GT levels Bilirubin levels Amino
transferases Alkaline phosphatase Within each module, material is
arranged in a series of pages, each dealing with a fundamental description
or concept. Information of increasing complexity is presented as
a sequence of layered windows within each page. Each layer is revealed
by clicking on hot text or diagrams in the current screen display.
The program design provides the student with control over the depth
and complexity of study.
