Summary

Screen shot from the package
This package introduces the student to halogen compounds and covers halide structure, nomenclature, properties and uses. It also describes the types of reaction that halides undergo. These reactions are illustrated using animations. Questions are interspersed throughout the package to test the student’s understanding.
Contents
Introduction
This activity introduces the student to the types of halogen compounds and covers the general structure of alkyl halides, allyl halides, vinyl halides and aryl halides.
Nomenclature
The student learns how to name halides and goes through parent names, prefixes, suffixes, locants and the correct use of di, tri etc.
General Properties
Some of the general properties of halides are discussed including infrared absorption, boiling points and melting points, reactivity and free radical oxidation.
Reactions
The aim of this activity is for the student to find out about the reactions undergone by halides, including nucleophilic substitution (SN1 and SN2) and base elimination (E1 and E2). The activity also discusses some of the factors that affect the type of mechanism, for example, the solvent used, the structural type of the haloalkane.
Uses
The student is briefly introduced to some of the uses of halides, for example, as pesticides.
