Medicines Information Screendump

MiCAL is a computer assisted learning package for pharmacists in Medicines Information (MI).

MiCAL gives a general introduction to MI Services and then concentrates on enquiry answering.

It comprises a series of training modules based on a paper-based medicines information system used in the UK.

Medicines Information Screendump MiCAL includes didactic instructional modules, on, for example, the use of information sources. It also contains a set of 25 example cases for users to work through, based around actual enquiries received. While working through these enquiries, users practise documenting information appropriately on an enquiry answering form.

MiCAL comprises two sections:

Section One

  • Guide To Package
  • MiCAL - Aims, Objectives And Competencies
  • Introduction To Medicines Information Services
  • Ethical Issues
  • Information Sources
  • Searching The Literature
  • Critical Appraisal

Section Two

When answering enquiries, Medicines Information pharmacists need to know how to structure and document the enquiry. Section two aims to address these issues.

This section introduces the enquiry answering form and demonstrates how to document information appropriately on the enquiry form.

The remainder of section two consists of twenty-five example enquiries which enable users to develop enquiry answering and documentation skills. In each enquiry activity, users are required to work through the enquiry in the following way:

  • Assess the initial question and address issues arising from the question.
  • Suggest what information sources to use to research the enquiry.
  • Research the issue.
  • Based on the results, an answer to the enquiry is constructed
