FROM THE SECTIONS YOU STUDIED, WHAT, IF ANYTHING, DID YOU FIND DIFFICULT TO GRASP?

ANY FURTHER COMMENTS OR OBSERVATIONS

001

How to name organic compounds (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes etc.) using the IUPAC system.

Naming of alkanes and simple alkenes.

Naming of complicated structures containing both double and triple bonds and with many branches.

002

The basics of nomenclature

All of it.

None of it. It was explained very well.

003

How to logically arrive at the nomenclature of organic compounds. Hence, able to figure out name of any compound you were faced with.

Section on double and triple bonds

I appreciated the fact that I could allocate any page at any time I wanted. In some software programmes, you have to finish the section or set of pages before transferring or going back to look something up.

004

Naming organic compounds correctly (in order etc.).

First section - naming alkanes.

005

Ease of naming compounds.

Naming and identifying parent hydrocarbon.

Numbering substituents and completing the name, i.e. putting hyphens and commas in the right place.

Very useful package.

007

Learn how to identify a compound from its name or structural formula - and how to name organic compounds.

The section on alkenes was easy to grasp.

The use of ISO and the (2 propyl) compounds in a question when they hadn't been mentioned before.

008

How to name organic compounds.

Numbering chains correctly (when they had more than 2 groups attached).

I enjoyed using this method as you could move at your own pace and if there was something you didn't understand you had the time to work it out.

009

The correct way to systematically name any organic compound I may encounter.

The windows-like system, used to control the package, also the information given.

Sometimes a little too basic, may be more suited to A-level candidates.

010

About naming organic compounds.

All.

011

How to name molecules, functional groups and positioning of side chains.

All of it was relatively easy to grasp.

A good idea! One can come back and study in their own time to make sure a topic is understood.

012

Nomenclature.

Package simple to use and easy to understand.

No mention of naming benzene-related compounds.

Very beneficial if used alongside lectures as anything you don't understand you can re-read and work through example. It has helped to clarify my knowledge.

013

How to be able to name any organic compounds.

014

How to name and understand the naming of organic compounds.

I found both the computer program itself and the content easy to grasp.

I didn't find anything particularly difficult to grasp.

I found the package very useful indeed as I was in need of a revision of the subject. Even if it had all been new to me I think it would still be very helpful as it was very clear and well presented for easy use. I am looking forward to completing the sections I didn't have time to cover and would rather use this package than looking in a text book.

015

A general knowledge and understanding of how to name compounds.

Most of the simpler questions on both the topics I looked at.

The later examples on naming the compounds.

Some of the later questions where you had to name the structure often brought up new structures not explained previously.

016

The correct method and easy way to name organic compounds.

The methods showing you the best way of naming the compounds.

Nothing.

It is a very useful package and I think that it enables you to teach yourself without much/any help from others. The package explains everything well and the solutions to questions are very clear.

017

I feel it was more of a revision of `A` level work.

Numbering the carbons in alkanes and alkenes. Numbering functional groups.

The naming of the yne compounds as I have never come across them before, i.e. never done triple bonds.

I really like the way the package started off by giving information then multiple choice questions and finally questions to be answered independently. It helped to build confidence.

018

Terminology of chemical nomenclature and how to name chemicals.

All of the work was easy to grasp.

None.

020

How to name organic compounds

Use of the program, naming the compounds.

No.

021

How to name organic compounds and be able to recognise compounds given their name.

Most of the work on basic alkanes.

The bits where there were say more than one double or triple bond.

022

To learn to name compounds.

None.

It takes quite a lot of time to finish a topic. In fact, it took me about 45 minutes today but I still haven't finished the questions on alkane. I'd think it's better to learn from the computer and do the questions separately, and later check the answers with the computer.

023

Naming different types of organic compounds.

Functional group nomenclature and naming alkanes.

Naming some of compounds with mixed functional groups.

024

Nomenclature.

Alkanes, alcohols.

How to name ethers.

I would have preferred a tutorial on nomenclature, compared to CAL because I find it easier to grasp something that is taught that way. You can't really ask for help whilst on the CAL as well.

025

How to name various compounds (organic) in steps which would be helpful for all types of organic compounds.

I found all of it easy to grasp as it was very clear and laid out in a very organised way.

It would have taken me longer to do all sections and I feel that I would be more unsure of the final section which I did not get a chance to work through. The package should be worked through at a reasonably quick pace.

026

Learn how to name the organic compound.

Naming the alkanes and alkenes.

Naming the functional group and triple bond.

027

The basics of nomenclature.

Most of the explanations were very clear and easy to understand.

Nothing.

029

Nomenclature skills/systems along with computer skills.

Most things.

Nothing.

030

How to name organic compounds.

Alkanes - naming.

Alkynes and alkenes occurring together.

Extremely useful. If I did not understand something I could go over and over it and if I found something easy I could skip the solution to problems.

031

How to use the correct prefixes with the correct punctuation in the correct order to name compounds.

Almost all of it - it was presented in a simplistic way.

Nothing - but I didn't study all the packages (not did functional group nomenclature).

I feel a little more confident about how to write things in the correct order and with correct punctuation. I felt I could do it before but it used to be a little muddled up.

032

A-level revision as well as avoiding "common mistakes".

Finding the longest chains.

When many functional groups interact, more complex molecules.

More "fill in the answer" questions for more complex molecules should be added.

033

How to apply nomenclature to compounds.

How to look for the longest carbon chain and names of functional groups.

When there is more than 1 group and the different suffixes.

034

A wider knowledge of many different groups involved in nomenclature, and also to work through gradually to explain any difficulties you had.

Basic alkanes and alkenes, with only methyl, ethyl, propyl or hydroxy groups added on.

Aldehydes, ketones, amines, amides, particularly when there was a combination of two or more groups.

035

The very basics of nomenclature in the alkanes section, i.e. how to identify longest chains, substituents etc.

It was all explained well so it was all `easy to grasp`.

Nothing.

036

The correct way to name organic compounds.

Naming the parent chain, prefixes and substituent groups.

Where exactly to position the hyphens and commas in very long names.

I thought that I knew pretty much everything about nomenclature of organic compounds, but today I learnt a lot of useful things, i.e. any gaps present before have been filled.

037

The proper method to name hydrocarbons and their compounds.

How easily it was explained.

038

How to name hydrocarbons by the IUPAC system.

039

Basic facts about chemistry, i.e. introduction to the subject.

Counting the number of carbon atoms.

None

If we could print the screen as we went on, if so where could it be collected. Problems when typing in answers to questions relating to leaving gaps between hyphens during the naming of compounds.

040

How to use computers. The way in which organic compounds are named and also how to answer questions on it.

It was all very easy to grasp, concise and easy to understand.

Nothing.

I prefer to work at my own pace (rather slow) and as a consequence did not reach the end of the package and still couldn't answer the questions. Found it a very useful aid to learning.

041

Naming organic compounds correctly.

Most of it.

Naming some compounds myself.

I enjoyed using the package and found it easy to understand. It was well laid out and the instructions were good.

042

How to name compounds correctly by using prefixes, parent names, suffixes and numbers.

Naming alkanes and alkenes.

I made a few mistakes in trying to work out the longest chain, sometimes it wasn't totally obvious.

I didn't get time to study the aromatic/cyclohexane etc. compounds and I do find these difficult therefore I could not answer the questions related to these.

045

How to correctly name the compounds and have a broader understanding of how to do so.

Where to put the commas and hyphens as before I kept getting mixed up.

Having to put the substituents of the compound in alphabetical order - I'd never know you had to do this.

I found having to write down the names of the compounds in the package useful as the multiple choice options could be fairly easily eliminated and gave the person a chance to make sure they get the commas and hyphens in correctly.

046

Everything about nomenclature in the topics covered.

Basically everything was quite easy to grasp.

Nothing.

This package was very helpful.

048

The basics of nomenclature, identifying functional groups and how to try and tie this in with complicated structures.

All.

None.

The package is pretty well laid out but it does become boring very easily. However, this package is easy to follow and the information is very good. Perhaps students studying A-level Chemistry would benefit greatly.

049

How to name organic compounds systematically.

The naming of alkanes and alcohols.

The naming of ethers, amines and amides.

The package was very easy to follow and helped quite a lot. However one session would probably be insufficient and if we got the chance to use the package again I would certainly do so.

050

How to name organic compounds.

Naming the alkenes.

Functional group nomenclature.

051

Being able to name and recognise hydrocarbons accurately.

Naming alkanes.

The use of commas and strokes (-) - using them accurately, i.e. spelling the compounds properly.

The package was useful but I would need more time working on it, through the various exercises in order to write notes on how to name the various compounds.

052

Package should have taught user the basic skills of naming organic compounds right through to more complex compounds.

Naming of alkanes and alkenes.

The naming of some of the more complex compounds.

053

Step by step instruction on how to do nomenclature of compounds, also familiarise with package.

Most content.

Nothing too difficult at all, apart from something I had never heard of - 'ISO' - didn't explain it - just produced it!!

I think it improved my understanding of nomenclature and I feel I would have done better in this 'quiz' if I'd managed to finish the package.

055

The correct way to name organic compounds.

Alkanes and some of the alkenes and alkynes.

The more difficult alkene and alkynes questions.

The package was well thought out and the instructions were easy to follow and more fun than a normal lecture would have been.

056

That computers can teach you too.

The instructions were very easy and the program was easy to follow.

Nothing.

I've never used a program like this before but I was very impressed. I feel that I have much more confidence now on computers.

057

How to name the organic compounds.

We'd already learnt most of it at school so it was mostly just revising.

Nothing really. But in the multiple choice questions 'ISO' was in the answer and hadn't been explained in the package.

We weren't given enough time. I don't think there will be much difference in the tests, as what I couldn't do before I still can't do because we didn't get time to finish so didn't cover this part.

058

How to name organic compounds using a standard set of rules.

Naming alkanes.

Functional group nomenclature.

It was difficult working through all 3 sections in the time allowed. Working on the package I feel I have learned some useful rules which will help me name organic compounds in the future.

059

Nomenclature, deriving the name of a compound from its structure.

Functional group nomenclature.

060

A more interesting way of learning nomenclature of organic compounds than in a lecture.

069

How to name organic compounds.

070

Correct way to name chemicals, with prefixes etc., in correct order with correct punctuation, e.g.. commas.

Correct order and punctuation of prefixes.

On writing out names of chemicals if a spelling mistake was made in answer, computer would tell you your naming was wrong, when in theory it was correct - perhaps it should be able to distinguish between silly spelling mistakes and wrong answers to prevent puzzlement.

071

How to name organic compounds.

Most things.

Some of the ways you numbered the C backbone chain. At first I found this a little confusing and naming the side chains and then incorporating this to give the correct answer.

On one section of the program the answer 'This answer is not incorrect' in response to one of the questions. I think it should have replied that the answer was incorrect.

072

The systematic approach to these areas of organic chemistry.

The procedure for naming alkanes.

The naming of the more complex organic substances such as the ethanoates.

There could be more information on the procedures for naming the complex organic molecules.

073

Alkanes - some of it.

Unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons - some of it and some of alkanes.

074

How to name organic compounds accurately.

Alkanes.

Some of the functional groups - substituted amines.

076

The IUPAC system of naming organic compounds.

I hope this package is continued to be used throughout the course.

077

The procedure for naming various classes of organic compounds.

Everything.

Nothing.

The package provides a clear and enjoyable means of instruction and the self-test options were very helpful.

078

Revise what I've learnt about alkanes.

081

How to use the package and understanding the naming of organic compounds (saturated and unsaturated).

The general rules and principles that you should apply.

The naming of very complex molecules.

I found it more beneficial than sitting down with a textbook or something of that nature.

082

How to name organic compounds correctly.

The order in which you go about naming a compound, i.e. alphabetical order - for alkyl groups etc.

The package makes understanding of how to name compounds easier than if you were to go about the same task using a book.

083

Methods for naming the organic compounds in the package.

Most of what I did.

None. The functional group nomenclature was more difficult than the other sections, but I didn't find it difficult to grasp.

We didn't have enough time to work through all the sections of the package.

084

The rules used to name compounds.

I found the naming of alkanes easy to grasp.

085

How to name compounds more confidently.

The use of dashes and commas in the correct places.

How to name something with more than one functional group.

It gets boring after about 30 minutes as it is repetitive. Looking at a computer for hours gives me headaches, so I don't really enjoy the monotonous exercises. Make them more fun. I don't think it should be compulsory, but used when it is most needed (by choice).

086

How to name different compounds.

Yes.

No.

087

Correct method of naming organic compounds with many functional groups and side branches.

Principles involved in naming.

Naming compounds which had an unusual combination of functional groups.

I practised well and was taught quite well how to name many organic compounds by my Chemistry tutors at tertiary college. But however, the package did help and is very useful.

089

The procedures to naming organic compounds.

Nothing.

090

The correct steps to name an organic compound.

The naming of alkanes and the numbering of carbon atoms in a long chain.

The correct places to put dashes and commas.

091

To learn how to name organic compounds using a system that assisted you.

The alkanes.

The functional group nomenclature because there was a lot of aromatic chemistry in it and I have only really studied benzene chemistry, e.g.. naming compounds containing cyclo groups.

I enjoyed using the package. It was more beneficial to me than having to re-learn my nomenclature from a text book and it is good that it shows you how to name them and tests you at the end.

092

Nomenclature of organic compounds.

All of it, that I had time to cover.

All of it, that I did not have time to cover.

Not enough time given to get through all the programs.

093

099

The ways and rules for naming compounds in the IUPAC system.

The naming of alkanes and alkenes particularly. Also, amyl halides, carboxylic acids and alcohols.

Amines, amides, alkynes.

Not enough information given on naming the functional groups, they were all very briefly dealt with. But the program was very easy to understand and follow.

102

How to name organic chemicals from their structures.

103

How to go about naming chemical compounds.

Naming straight chain alkanes.

Remembering structure and names of different chemical groupings.

104

How to name compounds correctly and how to identify functional groups within these compounds.

The sections I found easy were those that I had come across before, much of the package was just reinforcing this knowledge.

The difficulty arose when required to name a compound with various functional groups and side chains as order, numbering and 'grammar' was difficult to be accurate.

105

Operating the computer. The package was easy to use.

Some of the questions were difficult.

106

How to use IUPAC system of organic nomenclature.

The distinction between carbon numbering and carbon chains.

107

Revision on naming simple compounds and learning to name more complex compound.

The content of the program was easy to read and understand and therefore it was very easy to use the computer.

I found nothing difficult to grasp.

The answers to the problems were always clearly illustrated.

108

How to name alkanes and aliphatic hydrocarbons correctly and quickly.

Naming alkanes (not multiple choice).

109

Correct naming of organic compounds. Use of computers.

The rules for naming compounds and naming the easier to name ones.

Naming the complicated structures was the most difficult thing.

110

How to give chemical compounds their correct names.

The initial information section helped to reinforce my A-level knowledge of chemistry.

It was difficult to correctly name the compounds as I tended to miss out commas and hyphens.

111

Work through the package and learning from your mistakes and to put hyphens and commas in the correct place.

112

Naming of compounds by understanding the various functional groups.

Alkanes.

Acid amides.

Guidelines were very easy to follow but not enough time was allocated to read through them and complete the questions to each section.

113

The ability to interchange either written names or diagrams of any organic compound.

The numbering of the chains and naming of branching groups.

The system of dashes and commas between numbers/words.

Didn't give option of looking at answer of end questions (where typed in name), may have right answer, but not put a , in so told wrong answer - can't compare.

114

How to name alkanes, using names to find structural formulae.

How to use the package.

Nothing was difficult in the section I studied.

115

Rules for naming molecules so as to be able to name given compounds (organic).

The numbering of carbon atoms and the di/tri etc. when there was more than one of a group.

The order in which to name things. I often got the answer wrong from forgetting to name alphabetically.

116

How to name organic compounds. How to work and learn without being lectured or tutored.

Most of the nomenclature because I had studied it before but it did refresh my memory greatly.

The final part of functional groups which I had never done before.

A really good package from which I would have learned a great deal more if I had taken down notes. Unfortunately, I don't know how to load the program up and so could not use it alone if I went to the library.

117

The correct way to name (and write the names of) alkanes.

The straightforward alkanes (e.g.. with fairly straightforward functional groups/side chains).

The alkanes with more complicated functional groups/side chains.

I found it useful but mainly to refresh my memory about things I've forgotten over the summer.

118

Revise naming of the three sections to bring everyone to the same standard.

The steps used to name alkanes.

Remembering orders of the names.

I feel more confident in the naming of Alkanes but did not have time to do the other two sections so I feel less confident about them (unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and functional group nomenclature).

120

How to name the organic compounds.

Those complicated examples.

123

Naming organic compounds accurately.

Which steps to take in naming a compound (i.e. in which order).

The package explained all of the examples very well and also explained solutions to the problems set very well.

124

The naming of organic structures and an introduction to the types of functional groups.

All sections as each was clearly explained and illustrated.
