The software has ben used by the school of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences at the University of South Australia during 1997 by classes in Introductory Biochemistry in the Bachelor in Biomedical Science and Genetics and Molecular Biology in the Diploma in Biomedical Science. Both groups accessed the tutorial from the dedicated school computer teaching pool via a server installation. The setupin thie networked environment was relatively simple with the instructions provided by PCCAL, but not completely intuitive. The Caleidoscope Run-time module must be installed on the local workstation for correctoperation of the software. The former group of students have used the software in an unstructured wayto support the lecture material in the Introductory Biotechnology subject and found ita valuable supplement in this context. The latter group used thesoftware as a substitute for practical classes (forced by diminished resources) for some aspects of an introduction to molecular biologytechniques, particularly restriction enzyme manipulationof DNA and DNA electophoresis. Student response was very positive to this and understanding of the material covered appeared to be high and rapid. It is our intention to continue to use this software in both manners in these and other courses in 1998 and the future. The division of the tutorial into multiple topics provides an excellent means of directing students to specific and relevant topics so the wholetutorial can be used at different study levels within courses. |
