This package simulates a typical preparation of an anaesthetised mammal and demonstrates the effects of stimulating sympathetic/parasympathetic nerves and introducing various agonists and antagonists on heart rate and blood pressure. The necessary dissection and cannulation is described in some detail, with the aid of clear labelled diagrams. the results of experiments show blood pressure and pulse rate on a dual trace which mirrors a typical chart output. Excellent use is made of colour for maximum clarity.

Questions are asked at each stage, making the user think carefully about the procedure that is about to happen and further questions test understanding of the results obtained. At the end of each section a score is given offering encouragement or politely suggesting that a summary needs reviewing.

Bearing in mind that a Home Office license is required to peform the techniques described here, this simulation will be invaluable in situations where such practical work cannot be performed or where, for example, students would benefit from reviewing the techniques or results at leisure. For clarity and a straightforward treatment of sympathetic/parasympathetic neurotransmitters, their agonsts and antagonists and their effects on the cardiovascular sysem this simulation is highly recommended.
