5.3.3 Subject Confidence

Students were asked about their confidence in the subject before studying the package and asked to rate their level of confidence again after using the package. Figure 3 below show the levels of student confidence. Before studying the package, we can see that the majority of students already felt "Fairly Confident" in the subject matter. This is not surprising as the package is designed to supplement and reinforce material first introduced in schools at A level. After studying the package, a sizeable number (26%) of students felt their confidence in the subject to be about the same, but a much larger number (70%) stated that they felt either "More Confident" or "Much More Confident" after studying the package. Only a small number of students showed any decrease in confidence, suggesting that using the package increased student confidence in an area already familiar to them.

This clear increase in confidence is also evidenced in the open ended answers transcribed from post test questionnaires and from the discussion group tapes. The following quotations are illustrative:

"I really like the way the package started off by giving information then multiple choice questions and finally questions to be answered independently. It helped to build confidence."- Questionnaire response - Manchester

"I found the package very useful indeed as I was in need of a revision of the subject. Even if it had all been new to me I think it would still be very helpful as it was very clear and well presented for easy use. I am looking forward to completing the sections I didn't have time to cover and would rather use this package than looking in a text book"- Questionnaire response - Manchester

"It was very easy to work through. It was easy to follow"- Discussion Group - Liverpool 24/10/95
