5. The Nomenclature of Organic Compounds

5.2 Methodological Issues

The principal objective of the evaluation was to assess whether or not students showed a net gain in learning after a fixed period working with the package. Students were evaluated at four different institutions within the consortium - Manchester, Liverpool John Moores, Bath and Brighton. At each institution, the entire first year cohort was tested giving a total population for this study of 376. Of this total 241 (64%) were female and 135 (36%) male. However, at Liverpool John Moores two groups of students incorrectly studied a previous version of the package. Although there are only a small number of differences between versions 1 and 2, the erroneous group have been excluded from the analysis of pre and post test scores.

The evaluation was undertaken during a three hour timetabled slot at each institution for each grouping within the cohort. This overall time allocation had an effect on both the amount of time available to study the package and the nature and length of the pre and post tests administered. The students therefore had just one hour in which to study the package and pre and post tests were limited to ten questions with a short questionnaire accompanying this. The following results are therefore based upon a fairly limited study time, although this subject was not new to students, who would have initially encountered it at A level.
